Including protein with every meal can help balance blood sugar. Protein is a critical part of the processes that fuel your energy and carry oxygen throughout your body in your blood. Protein helps make antibodies, antibodies fight off infections and illnesses and helps keep cells healthy and create new ones.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation and potentially lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Sources of fatty acids include fruits, vegetable oils, seeds, nuts, and fish like salmon. Both white and oily fish are good sources of lean protein.

Whole grains are packed with nutrients. Nutrients such as protein, fiber, B vitamins, antioxidants, and trace minerals (iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium). Consuming a diet rich in whole grains can possibly reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some forms of cancer.

Eating the rainbow involves eating fruits and vegetables of different colors every day. Plants contain different pigments, which give them their color. Different-colored plants are linked to higher levels of specific nutrients and health benefits. For example, red color in most fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Dietary fats or ‘good fats’ are essential to give your body energy and to support cell function. They also help protect your organs. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and they produce important hormones. Some examples of ‘good fats’ are avocados, olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.

Drinking water can prevent dehydration, which can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones.

Following proper nutrition can help reduce your risk for back pain, joint pain and muscle strain. The bones, muscles and other structures in the spine need proper nutrition so they are strong enough to support the body.
